ONE-SIZE-DOES-NOT-FIT-ALL

Perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to fitting a pack is size. Height means nothing. Torso length, everything!

An accurate torso measurement ensures the majority of the packs weight is correctly transferred onto the main structure of the body – the hips. This load transfer onto the hips is accomplished via the lumbar pad and waistbelt transfer panels; resulting in a more comfortable fit and greatening your chance of "epicness" while hiking.

Also pivotal in the quest for fit is proper waistbelt and harness sizing. So while ALL Gregory packs come in various frame/torso sizes, models like the JetStream LTS also come with an adjustable waistbelt and one-time quick adjustment. And larger capacity packs, such as the Response CFS and AFS lines, have fully interchangeable harness and waistbelt components – allowing you to customize the pack and get the ultimate fit for your body type.

THE FIT-O-MATIC

Never has such a genius tool had such a silly name.

In 1999, Wayne Gregory developed the Fit-o-Matic as a way to properly measure torso length by precisely lining up 2 points – the C7 vertebrae and the top of the iliac crest (hips). From this measurement, the correct pack size can be determined.

In 2009, the Fit-o-Matic got a Fit-o-Facelift when it got the ability to take harness, waistbelt, and hip angle measurements as well. Making it an invaluable tool for our retailers when fitting you for any of the packs in our CFS, AFS or LTS line.

ANATOMY OF SUSPENSION

The human body is capable of comfortably supporting a significant amount of weight, but only if it is placed correctly on the body. The pelvic structure, and more specifically the iliac crest, is the perfect place to carry a pack's weight. Gregory suspensions are highly efficient, integrated systems designed to do just this – channel the weight of the pack to the correct area of your body to ensure a comfortable carry.

Stays

The backbone of our packs is created with stays that are pre-shaped and proportionally sized for different torso lengths. The stays’ vertical stiffness supports and directs the load, which can then flex and twist with the body’s movements while remaining stable.

Attaching the stays to the waistbelt load transfer panels results in a direct transfer of the pack’s weight to the hips and evenly around your waist. Instead of pulling down on your back and shoulders the weight is comfortably supported on your hips; which are capable of handling this weight.

Lumbar Pads

Centered between the load transfer panels and your back are Gregory’s signature lumbar pads. The lumbar pads are designed to assist load transfer and, when your torso is measured correctly, fit perfectly into the small of your back. We use multiple densities of foam sandwiched together, resulting in progressive cushioning that protects your back while providing the firmness required for efficient load transfer.

Harness & Waistbelt

The 3D ultra-soft, precurved harness and waistbelt components found on our Response CFS and AFS packs provide maximum comfort by eliminating wrinkles and hot spots on areas of contact with the hips and shoulders.

The LifeSpan EVA foam technology used in our 3D components keeps them from compressing and maximizes comfort throughout the life of the pack.

PAINT IT PINK AND CALL IT WOMEN’S?

It's a trend that has to stop and we at Gregory have been at the forefront of changing it. Each and every one of our women’s packs is not only designed specifically for women, but for all types of women.

Every shape, every size; we create women’s specific versions of our harnesses, waistbelts and backpanels so that all women can have a pack that fits their frame.

The Response CFS and AFS packs are prime examples of this. Each is either fully adjustable or automatically cants to mirror a women’s hip to waist angle, creating the optimal and most comfortable fit, every time.
